Vote counting stopped, restarted from scratch

An election official nearly caused most of the ballots in Ward 2 to be counted twice, causing a lengthy delay in tabulating the results of the Fort Erie municipal election Monday.

Clerk Carolyn Kett said a deputy returning officer erroneously opened the sealed ballot box containing the day’s ballots already counted through the vote tabulator and placed them with ballots that had not been counted.

Since the ballots had been co-mingled, the process was stopped and restarted from the beginning with a new vote tabulator.
