Two NRPs face assault charges

Two Niagara Regional Police officers have been charged with assault in an on-duty incident which occurred at the Niagara Falls detachment.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit, which investigates reports involving police in serious cases, made the announcement Wednesday.

Const. John Garner and Sgt. Patrick McGilly are accused of assaulting and injuring a man who attended the police station in relation to a ticket late Wednesday night on Feb. 6.

They are expected to appear in court on May 6 in St. Catharines. Both are charged with assault. The sergeant is also charged with causing bodily harm.

The Justice Prosecutions branch of the Ministry of the Attorney General is prosecuting.

Neither the NRP nor the SIU will comment further.
