Two killed in crash into river

[UPDATED] Two Fort Erie men were killed in a car crash into the Niagara River near Netherby Road sometime before 7:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28.

Carlos Mejia, 30, and Joseph Holika, 39, were the only occupants of a passenger vehicle that failed to stop at the intersection with the Niagara Boulevard and plunged into the river, Niagara Regional Police say.

A pedestrian noticed severe damage to the boat ramp Saturday morning and called police who began searching the river.

NRP divers and an Erie County Sheriff’s helicopter found the car approximately 200 metres downstream around 5 p.m.

While trying to recover the car on Sunday, two bodies were found inside, according to Staff Sergeant David Hunter.

Police continue to investigate.
