Steckley ordered anti-condo assault in ’08

The Ridgeway Herald special web release

Councillor Bob Steckley says a “well-orchestrated assault” took place at the Fort Erie town council meeting of Feb. 22 when many people registered their complaints against council’s decision to repeal the Bay Beach zoning amendment.

He said they were chosen to speak to try to scare one of the councillors into reversing their position on the issue.

It’s an interesting point, considering Steckley was at the forefront of the campaign against the project as far back as the summer of 2008 when he urged people to sign petitions, contact councillors and make their opposition clear to the press and council.

“We need to rally the troops and be very loud and publicly denounce this decision in the press and to council,” he wrote in an email to one of the outspoken critics of the project.

“Have everyone that contacts you also contact every member of council including the mayor about their displeasure in our decision!”

“Unfortunately the council meeting wasn’t televised the other night.  If you could have heard some of the idiotic statements made you would be livid!”

A printed copy of the  email was acquired shortly after it was written. It reads:

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your email!

I believe we need to move fast to stop this nonsense. A delegation to council by you and those who sat on in on the neighbourhood plan would be in order. We were told that this development is in line with the neighbourhood plan.

Save all of the emails and phone calls you get on this issue. A petition needs to be started ASAP.

We need to rally the troops and be very loud and publicly denounce this decision in the press and to council.

Have everyone that contacts you also contact every member of council including the mayor about their displeasure in our decision!

Unfortunately the council meeting wasn’t televised the other night.  If you could have heard some of the idiotic statements made you would be livid!

We are already recouping $100,000.00 a year from the paid parking at Bay Beach. If that money was put into improvements there every year, we would have no need to sell any part of this valuable and irreplaceable property!!!!

Please stay in touch and feel free to call me if you wish.

Regards,

Bob Steckley
