Speedway hearing to wrap up Thursday

The Ridgeway HeraldThe Ontario Municipal Board hearing on the Canadian Motor Speedway proposal  in Fort Erie is nearing its end with final submissions on Thursday morning.

Evidence was heard over the course of eight days since June 18 which detailed the plans and the opposition to a NASCAR-style one-mile racetrack and associated 2.5 road course with seating for 65,000 people.

The development plan calls for a creek to be realigned, and that environmental impact is one peg on which opponents have hung there hopes.

The other main issues include noise, air pollution, traffic and the disruption to their lives the rural property owners say they will experience.

One group, Citizen’s Coalition of Greater Fort Erie, reached a settlement shortly before the hearing opened. The terms specify that drag racing will be prohibited and all motor sports activity will cease at least one day a week.

A third provision calls for the Town to amend its business licencing bylaw to regulate motor racing.
