Rabid skunk prompts health warning

Niagara Public Health department is warning people to take precautions against rabies as an infected skuck was found in the urban area of Welland.

According to a press release this morning, the problem has increased the past two years, particularly among raccoons, with 21 infected animals found last year compared to 12 in 2016.

Wild animals should not be approached, especially if they appear in distress and any bites or scratches should be reported to the health department at 905-688-8248.

Report wild animals exhibiting abnormal behaviour to local animal control services. In Fort Erie, call the SPCA at 905-871-2461.

Residents should ensure their pets have their current rabies vaccinations and should not be allowed to roam free.
