Martin named to NPC board

Mayor Doug Martin will return to sit on the board of the Niagara Parks Commission despite a request from the provincial minister of tourism to step aside.

Fort Erie Town Council confirmed the customary appointment of the mayor to the commission Monday night in a special closed-door meeting.

[Update: The meeting was held prior to the start of the regular proceedings. It was accidentally advertised as being a closed meeting. It was an oversight, explained clerk Carolyn Kett. The committee room doors were open during the meeting as they would be for an open meeting, but the door from the lobby was closed.]

Tourism minister Michael Chan wanted municipalities to send new representatives to make a clean sweep of  members after removing all four provincial appointees — except the chairman — two weeks ago, replacing them with six high-ranking bureaucrats until new permanent appointments are made.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls and Niagara Region are also represented on the commission.

Why does Martin not want to step down? Mabee he wants to control the NPC like he does the Town of Fort Erie.

Why should Martin step down? Why do you speculate about his and anyone else’s motives?
