Local cop busted with $500K in drugs in U.S.

A Niagara Regional Police constable was arrested in Buffalo with a veritable pharmacy of illegal drugs worth more than $500,000, including steroids, growth hormone, tranquilizers and the main ingredient of a date rape drug.

Geoffrey Purdie, a 13-year veteran of the NRP, was suspended from duty with pay on April 5 as a result of the arrest.

U.S. federal authorities charged him with conspiracy to traffic and to export controlled substances.

He was released from custody on a promise to appear in United States Federal Court to answer the charges.

Purdie was nabbed by a bi-national task force composed of U.S. Homeland Security agents, Canada Border Security agents, RCMP, OPP, NRP, and Toronto and Peel police departments.

The Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST) had been involved in a long-term investigation targeting smuggling in the Niagara area.

Investigators seized testosterone, Valium, Xanax, anabolic steroids and gamma butyrolactone, the main ingredient in a street drug called GHB, a potent sedative.
