Ruth Ellsworth passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2005 at Douglas Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

The 101-year-old former teacher at Ridgeway Public School saw generations pass through her classroom during her more than 40-year career.

She would have turned 102 in February.

The determined and active member of People’s Memorial United Church was a charter member of the International Order of the Daughters of the Empire.

Miss Ellsworth was also a volunteer with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Bertie Historical Society and the Fort Erie Museum and others.

She was the museum’s first curator — working as a volunteer — and catalogued all the artifacts. She continued her volunteer services after staff was hired in 1987.

“Her memory was impeccable,” said current museum curator Jane Davies, “up until she fell ill very recently.”

Her funeral is today at People’s Memorial. Arrangements were entrusted to The Williams Funeral Home. Interment is at Ridgeway Memorial Cemetery.
