Fort Erie to pledge $3 million for new hospital

Fort Erie town council is expected tonight to pledge $3 million toward a proposed hospital at Lyons Creek Road at Montrose in Niagara Falls — the so-called Niagara South Hospital.

The proposal is one of the recommendations of Kevin Smith who was tapped to take over control of the Niagara Health System two years ago in the wake of emergency room and bed closures at number of hospital sites in the region and the dismissal of NHS head Debbie Sevenpifer.

The location was selected by six southern tier mayors and was helped along by the donation of 30 acres of land by John Grassi of Toronto.

The province has not approved Smith’s recommendation and there is no indication it will, but it is widely supported.
