Damaging winds expected overnight

Strong damaging winds and possibly rain are expected to smash into Fort Erie and Niagara overnight and continue into early Friday morning with gusts to 60 km/h and more.

A low pressure system developing over the Southwestern U.S. will continue it’s trek toward Ontario today. This system is expected to intensify and track into Lake Huron tonight then to Northeastern Ontario by early Friday morning.

Heavy rain associated with this system is expected over the Bruce Peninsula and areas east of Georgian Bay. The rain is forecast to persist today and throughout the night. Rainfall amounts of 50 to 60 mm are possible before the rain tapers off Friday morning.

In addition to the rain, this storm is expected to bring brisk winds to Southern Ontario this afternoon with gusts to 50 to 60 km/h. Winds will continue to increase into this evening and overnight. For areas near the Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, Eastern Lake Erie and Eastern Lake Ontario shores where winds will be coming in directly off the lakes, southwest winds 70 with gusts up to 100 km/h are expected overnight and early Friday morning. Winds of this magnitude could bring down trees and power lines.
