Contract specs weighted against Eurocopter

Federal authorities allowed a Quebec firm to exceed weight specifications that gave the company an unfair advantage for a $200 million contract to supply helicopters for the Coast Guard, St. Catharines MP Rick Dykstra says.

According to the National Post newspaper, Eurocopter Canada of Fort Erie and another company withdrew their bids after Bell Helicopter Textron Ltd. was granted an exemption to allow an additional 500 pounds to the 7,000-pound limit.

The contract was to supply 26 aircraft and may have been worth $1 billion over 20 years including maintenance and 200 jobs for the local company.

This is absolutely atrocious!!! Why make a concession for one company to give it an edge over the other two???? This is truly an unfair advantage!!! Our government needs a wake up call…
