BIA wants turfed member reinstated

The Bridgeburg Business Improvement Area wants its turfed board member reinstated.

The board of management of the BIA wrote the Town of Fort Erie last week, saying members were “disturbed and shocked by the sudden removal” of Peter Koutroulakis.

Chairman David Dimberio wrote in the letter that Koutroulakis was a “highly-valued member of our board” and that his removal by town council has “abrogated” his right to freedom of speech.

The letter asks that Koutroulakis be reinstated and that if there are any concerns about members that the board be informed in writing “so that we might be afforded the opportunity of policing one of our own.”

Town council removed him from the volunteer position with the BIA March 28 on a motion by councillor Bob Steckley citing “conduct unbecoming a member of a Town board or committee.”

Steckley had complained at an earlier meeting — without naming anyone — about comments on Facebook pages that were critical of him and other councillors.

Koutroulakis has used the Facebook page of his restaurant, Old Bank Bistro, to sharply and roundly criticize Steckley, John Hill, Paul Collard and Don Lubberts about their attempts to breach the contract for the Bay Beach condominium development.

“I would like them to be reminded that they must respect the decisions and finality of council and that they must maintain a high degree of professionalism because that is definitely not happening out there,” Steckley said in February.

Steckley, Hill, Collard and Lubberts voted to have Koutroulakis removed. Stephen Passero, Rick Shular and Mayor Doug Martin were opposed.

Also said by Peter K. on April 18th, 2011: “I would also remind Bob Steckley and his foursome to respect the decisions and finality of the previous council’s decisions, and if they continue to dispute other decisions, they will need more legal counsel in the future.”

The vote to remove Peter K. from the BIA board is just one of several 4-3 votes that have Fort Erians shaking their heads. If Steckley and the puppets vote 4-3 to not reinstate Peter that would be another great disservice to our town. Good work to his fellow board members who have decided to go to bat for him. Respect from your peers speaks volumes. People like Peter who donate their precious time to sit on a BIA Board are showing that they care strongly about their community! When the board meeting ends the caring does not turn off! It often spills into the influential world of Social Media. I myself have been more vocal that ever before. Ridiculing the Clowncillors on Facebook is all a town loving guy like me feels he can do without going postal. If our council was making sound decisions none of this big joke would even be happening! Do the town a favor and REINSTATE PETER! If the board will take me… I will sit on the board in Peter’s place if things don’t work out. I’m just a little scared they might vote me out too! It might be wise to give up that BINGO $$$. Thanks to all like Peter who are not afraid to speak out when they see things are really wrong!

I believe at the next council meeting if we look very closely there will be 4 copies of Mao’s little red book in the chamber…

Maybe no little red book but they will all have copies of the script.
