Berry withdraws from election

Richard Berry used his closing remarks at the candidates’ debate in Ridgeway Thursday night to announce he is withdrawing from the municipal election.

He said he suffered a stroke two weeks ago, saying his doctor said it will kill him to continue in the election.

Looking frail and unsteady on his feet, Berry received a rousing ovation when he made the announcement.

Berry made opening remarks, answered questions and saved the news for the end. He left the building, standing up from the candidates’ table while Mayor Doug Martin, who was last to speak for the evening, gave his closing speech.

“Bullshit,” he muttered as he passed the press table toward the exit.

Berry’s withdrawal may not be official as the deadline to withdraw was Sept. 10, so his name will remain on the ballot. Whether he will serve if elected is not known.

The candidate field in Ward 6 in Stevensville is now Paul Collard, Larry Graber, George Jardine and Rick Unyi.

Berry served as councillor for Ridgeway for four terms from 1994 to 2006 when he was defeated by Tim Whitfield in a two-person race. Berry originally sought election in Ward 2 against incumbent Rick Shular but jumped to Ward 6 when incumbent Ann-Marie Noyes registered to run for mayor.

Could someone provide me with an online mail number for George Jardine. He is a good man and I wish him every success. He will put his heart into doing a proper job for you.
