Artists open studios for public tours

Artists along the lakeshore from Ridgeway to Lowbanks will open their studios this weekend to exhibit their works and their working environments for anyone who cares to visit.

It is the second annual Studio Tour organized by South Niagara Artists with 21 artists who work in all media and have opened their galleries and studios this Saturday and Sunday.

As well as an opportunity to visit with artists and see them at work, the tour is a wonderful day trip through some of the beautiful, out-of-the way places away from beaches, shopping and traffic.

None of the participants is very far from the Friendship Trail, so it is also a good chance to ditch the car and take a bike.

For those unfamiliar with the back roads and off-the-beaten-path urban environments, the tour is great reason to explore.

Starting from the east is Alison Barclay at 252 Bernard Ave. She is a wood carver who creates colourful and unique bird houses, feeders and other items for the garden.

Dianne and Peter Perham at Perham Stained Glass Studio at 3544 Algonquin Dr. create custom leaded stained glass for windows, cabinets, lamps and hangings. They also offer classes and glass making supplies at the studio.

Don West at 106 Haun Road is the first of a number of artists featured in Crystal Beach. He is a painter who specializes in capturing motion on canvas.

Rey Baecher, 3949 Farr Avenue, is the winner of several national awards for his drawings and paintings in oil, watercolour and pastel.

Not far away is Phyllis McKay at 3976 Farr Avenue  who is a self-taught landscape painter in acrylic.

Sharing the studio at 3976 Farr is Michelle Morrissey, a veteran art teacher who works in assemblage of mixed media incorporating pinhole photography, cyanotypes and found objects.

David Drum and Barbara Vance at 293 Oxford Ave. operate Le Bateau Gallery of Fine Art, showcasing original oils, mixed media works and restoration.

Kyla Gramatovich at 5987 Sherkston Rd. works in a variety of media but lately has concentrated in oils, acrylics and watercolours.
